Chronic Diseases are the most important health problems in the world. Most of them are preventable with lifestyle but their rampant growth cannot be explained by accusing the population of being lazy, overeaters and that lack willpower. In this book, we show how obesity, diabetes, high-blood pressure and other chronic ailments have been created by structural forces such as the food and pharma industries, a poor medical management and an endemic culture that generates and maintains unhealthy behaviors.
But the story does not end there. If the system is to blame for chronic problems, it is only the individual who is responsible for doing something about it. By fostering response-ability, by knowing oneself and by re-imagining a new identity, the patient can find a new way to manage and ultimately revert his disease.
For this, we now have the Lifestyle Medicine movement, which can be paired with a new sense of self to reprogram our subconscious drivers and re-invent a new person: healthier, wiser, happier.
This book – part social anthropology, part self-help- guides the reader to decontextualize chronic disease and shows how we can get to a point where we thank our disease for being the platform that bootstraps our transformation.
