Complex, Critical, Interdisciplinary and Systems Thinking in Health
We all know what “Health” and “Medicine” mean but we seldom take the time to re-think them
Health is more than having hospitals and ORs, more than having access to drugs and doctors, more than just breathing clean air and eating healthy. Health is a system. And it is interdependent with many other systems.
Today more than ever, our success as stakeholders in this industry, relies in having a much more interdisciplinary grasp of what is Health and our role shaping it.
This course gives you the theoretical and practical tools to understand and take part in the paradigmatic transformations that are taking place in Health.

COURSE CURRICULUM_
INTRODUCTION TO COMPLEX THINKING
_ CARTESIAN SCIENCE AND DUALISM
_ EPISTEMOLOGY AND ONTOLOGY: EAST AND WEST
- INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPLEX THOUGH APPLIED TO HEALTH SCIENCES
In addition to reviewing the numbers and the reasons for the so-called Epidemiological Transition of the last decades -in which chronic diseases have become the most prevalent- we will see that "health" goes beyond accessibility to medical services to include issues of individual behavior, genetics, environment, and the Social Determinants of Disease (education, safety, employment, income, community, etc). Moreover, we will understand how health is not only about the individual, but a complex super-structure of economical, political and cultural realms that interact in multidimensional ways.
By understanding and expanding the perspectives presented in class, the student will be able to make more precise judgments about what determines the health of patients and, as such, will have a greater perspective to guide interventions and programs.
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL TRANSITION AND EXTENDING THE DEFINITION OF “HEALTH”
_ NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASE S
_ DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH
_ SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH
_ SYNDEMIC (EG. FOOD: HEALTH, SOCIETY, PLANET)
- WICKED PROBLEMS
- FIVE THINGS WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE
In addition to reviewing the numbers and the reasons for the so-called Epidemiological Transition of the last decades -in which chronic diseases have become the most prevalent- we will see that "health" goes beyond accessibility to medical services to include issues of individual behavior, genetics, environment, and the Social Determinants of Disease (education, safety, employment, income, community, etc). THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF ILLNESS
- THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF REALITY
- THE SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF ILLNESS
- ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE PLACEBO EFFECT AND THE STRESS MINDSET
Diseases go beyond a physiological imbalance in which cultural meanings play a determining role in understanding the disease as well as its diagnosis, prognosis and care. By visualizing the unvoiced narratives of culture, the student will broaden his understanding of “disease" (the biological condition) by defining “illness” as the sociological realm that creates in various ways the biophysiological condition. Social constructionism provides an important counterpoint to medicine’s largely deterministic approaches to disease and illness, and it can help us broaden clinical interventions and policy deliberations.
THE HERO´S JOURNEY
- THE POWER OF STORY: CAMPBELL´S HERO´S JOURNEY
- THE POWER OF VULNERABILITY.
- SELF-AUTHORSHIP
READ THIS ARTICLE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS SPECIAL WORKSHOP:
The Hero’s Journey of Patients and Health Professionals
Joseph Campbell coined the term “The Hero's Journey” to define the basic pattern of many epic tales and tales in history: “The hero sets out on an adventure from his everyday world to regions of supernatural wonder; the hero encounters fabulous forces and ends up with a decisive victory; the hero returns from this mysterious adventure with the power to grant favors to his fellow men ”.
Having understood the complexity and social construction of Health, this lecture and workshop will position the Hero´s Journey as an important clinical tool to empower patients and societies to re-write their stories. The workshop will enable the student to understand its own past and present, personal and professional struggles, as stepping stones for a life of Wellness. This archetype can be then used to guide patients and communities through their own transformative journeys.
THE NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS PARADIGMS (part 1)
- THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS
- PHILOSOPHICAL PRINCIPLES, INSTITUTIONS, KOLS AND TRENDS:
_P4 Medicine
_Functional Medicine
_Wellness
_Lifestyle Medicine
We have all heard about the new trends in Health and Wellness (Functional, P4, Lifestyle, Integrative, Wellness). We will talk about these movements (history, principles, institutions, KOL´s) and the ways in which they are challenging Health paradigms around the world, in their practical ways of doing medicine as well as the theoretical and epistemological principles that are being offered. The student will have a clearer understanding of how to take advantage of these new tools and programs to incorporate them into his/her life projects and ways of thinking about the evolving role of the clinician and the clinical setting.
THE NEW HEALTH AND WELLNESS PARADIGMS (part 2)
- THE COMMUNITY CURE:
_ The transformative effect of Group Consultations
_ Smart Health Communities
- COACHING AS CLINICAL PROCESS
- POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
- DESIGN THINKING + SOCIAL DESIGN FOR HEALTH
Enabling health communities, group consultations, coaching, and design thinking are new thinking and working tools that expand the health-creating mindset. Rethinking the role of the health professional and health entrepreneur within the context of these areas is key to keep contracting the new Health Paradigms of the future.
WHO IS THE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL?
- THE SCARCITY PARADIGM (MONEY, TIME, RELATIONSHIPS, SUCCESS, STATUS) IN MEDICAL PRACTICE.
- DOCTORS ARE PEOPLE: KNOW THYSELF IN ORDER TO HEAL THE OTHER
- MY TRAUMAS, MY FEARS, MY BELIEFS
Reviewing the Iceberg of our personality allows us to visualize the creation of the "I" from a renewed perspective. Sharing these insights with our colleagues opens us even more to creative possibilities. The journey of self-creation begins by knowing who we are and by challenging the years of emotional and practical conditioning in which we have all lived. Through personal exploration, we invite the clinician to keep asking: Who is the Health Professional?
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
- HIPOCRATIC OATH 2.0
- DEFINITIONS OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS
- TOWARDS INTERDISCIPLINARY HEALTH
In the last module, we will review our journey to drive a renewed agenda of greater curiosity and exploration: How did my definition of health and well-being change? What thoughts and practices do I want to nurture or incorporate into my personal and professional life?
As always, the closing is just a beginning.
